The Discogs listing for this one describes it as "new wave". There were 300 copies in different handmade covers. As new wave goes it tends towards the weirder side of things, especially on Side B. There seems to be some postpunk, no wave and other things mixed in. There's sax, but not in a bad way. Some of the B side tracks were hard to separate so I've left them together.

The Utangarðsmenn had this 12" EP released in Sweden as The Outsiders. One track was included on the Powerpearls Vol. 7 compilation. This one has been requested several times and as we (eventually) aim to please, here it is. You can check out their first LP over at Wilddevilrules. When singer Bubbi Morthens left the band the remaining members continued as The Bodies, releasing an EP in 1982.

Supposedly only 300 copies were made of this LP. I've seen it sell on eBay in the past for around $150. The same seller seemed to have some number of copies so maybe it's cheaper now? Two of the tracks (Sweat Brains / Heute Abend) were also released as a 7".

Now, for a complete mystery, at least to me. The person I got this from said it was Finnish and from the 80s. At least some of the last song is in English but beyond that I can't make much out. Here's what I can tell you:
1) The sound is heavy hardcore that seems typically mid 80s. To me it sounds more Japanese than anything but hardcore is not something I'm particularly interested in or knowledgeable about.
2) The only markings in the dead wax are "MPS A", "MPS B" and something that looks like "OP13".
3) Side A has two distinct tracks and plays at 45. Side B has 3 and plays at 33.
4) Track #3 (the first on Side B) has "5-4-3-2-1-0 Ignition Liftoff" near the beginning which should be memorable if you're familiar with the song.

Take a listen and if you know what this is I'd really like to know.

All I could find online about this one was a brief description on the Punk Rock In Upstate New York page where it says "One punk ripper, one minimal synth instro and one metal song.". The scan shown online has the name of the producer and song credits blanked out for whatever reason. For security purposes I've also removed the engineer and technician but I thought Sheri Sue at least deserves credit for being the hair consultant. From the names involved it would seem both bands are closely related. No date on the record but the one online reference I found says 1982.

At about 5 minutes each both songs go on for too long and wouldn't be out of place on some mid-80s AOR LP.

This is one I had been curious about since I saw it listed on eBay many years ago as (what else?) "powerpop". I finally found a copy and wasn't surprised to find that there's really no powerpop to be heard. The instrumental B side may be of some interest to synth fans. All instruments are played by Kenneth Skoog who has provided some more info. It was recorded in Kivik (very south of Sweden) with 300 copies pressed. He also released a CD of instrumental hard rock in 2000 called "Deflagration". In 1979 he was part of a band called Pharamond that played instrumental music in the styles of Wishbone Ash, Jimi Hendrix and King Crimson as well as some jazz-rock. He wanted the band to release a record but the other members weren't interested, so he went and did this one on his own in August 1980.

All I could find about this one was a past eBay auction describing it as weird and scary. "Two songs from St. Louis artist recorded back in '83 and this is truly a love or hate proposition ... Vocals are rough-going and arrangements are all over the map. Subject matter is key here ...". Ignoring the lyrical content, I find "Chuckie" to be the better of the 2 songs.

The Illusions were from Melbourne and released one EP in 1980 and an LP called Mirror Image in 1981. The sound is mostly a pop/rock mix with a powerpop edge. 100 copies of the EP were made and most were sent out to radio stations. The EP did make the top ten of the 3RRR chart in January 1981 along with bands like The Church, The Clash, Fad Gadget, Mental As Anything and Midnight Oil. The LP is in a similar style to EP. More on it later. The cover of the EP is really more of a yellow color than shown but my camera does a lousy job with yellow.

This one appeared on eBay a while back, initially listed with an opening bid of $700 and a "Buy It Now" price of something like $2500 if I remember correctly. OK, punk collectors on eBay often do get a little retarded but I think the seller was being just a tad optimistic. When it was relisted with a more realistic opening bid, it ended up selling for $27!

Aburadako began in 1983 as a hardcore punk band, releasing a flexi and a 12" EP on the ADK label before starting to move off in a more avant-garde rock direction. You should be able to find both ADK releases around various blogs without too much effort. Both the ADK releases and the tracks from the V/A - Great Punk Hits LP have been released on CD with different live tracks. This is a compilation of various live material that starts out with the 4 live songs from the out of print OK CD and includes things from various tapes I've accumulated over the years. I've never bothered to figure out the song titles but some I recognize from the flexi and 12". Sound quality varies as would be expected.

This cassette contains various live recordings from some place apparently called the Vardaxrum. There are a variety of styles with the recordings dating from 1981 - 1984. The sound quality varies. These are generally pretty good with the highlight perhaps being a manic version of "Ronny" by ABKK. There are at least 3 other cassettes with similar recordings that may have been compiled by the same person: Direkt från Vardaxrummet, Mera Ljav från Ultra and Ultra Ljav eller Lever. I don't have any of them so if anyone would like to pass them along, please let me know.

Something a little different this time ... this record is a complete mystery to me since almost everything except the date (I assume the big "1991" written in blue marker is the date) is written in Thai. The seller said it was "heavy metal", no doubt based on the photo of the dudes on the cover. No heavy or metal here, the sound is really more like Thai pop music for the most part. Just one of the offbeat things I pull out of my collection every so often.

Here's one that drives powerpop collectors crazy. Prices of £400 - 500+ are not unusual when it does infrequently come up for sale. It was sort of posted over at the excellent Deadbeats & No Ones blog a while back. Here it is again, along with a little bonus. Their only other appearance on vinyl was the Sent From Coventry compilation LP, also in 1980. There were also 2 songs released as a cassette single, mentioned in this article, that were done for a theatre production.

I had previously posted The Gents 7" and at the time I was still looking for their LP. I've since found it and as there were a few requests for it, here it is. Luckily I didn't pay much for it since I found it somewhat disappointing after reading about it here where it is described as "measured rock with more than a hint of punk". I don't even hear a hint of punk but maybe that's just me. Side A has a few decent melodic songs but overall I find it lacking in energy. The aforementioned review goes on further to state: "Despite the album being a controlled and well produced affair, judging by the pictures on the sleeve, The Gents look like they were a colourful, energetic and probably quite loud live act with a fair following."

More of a hippy rock outfit than a punk band these guys from Sooke, British Columbia (not far from Victoria) managed to record this one 7" in December, 1980 in an attempt to get more shows from local establishments. The A side ("The Stud") was included on the excellent 2CD compilation called "All Your Ears Can Hear - Underground Music in Victoria, BC 1978 - 1984" along with an unreleased song called "She's Weird". 500 were pressed but only around 50 were distributed at the time. The rest were dumped or ended up in thrift shops years later. It doesn't turn up too often, fetching around $150 at times. More recently a copy sold for around 1/5 of the earlier eBay auction. Being patient can sometimes pay off.

Nothing connects these records (that I'm aware of) except that both have in the past appeared on eBay with the ubiquitous "powerpop" description. While the A sides of each may fleetingly veer into what might be considered "powerpop" I think both remain firmly planted in rock/AOR territory. That said, I don't mind both "You're A Special Girl" and "Lay It On The Line". As for the B sides, my mother always told me that if you can't say anything nice ...

Formed in 1978 P.F. Commando would release 2 7" EPs and 2 LPs over the next 2 years. Here you have the second LP, of which 2000 were pressed and 1500 supposedly thrown in the junk due to poor sales. You can find their amazing first 7" EP here, the classic first LP (Manipulerade Mongon) here and the "In A Pose" (unreleased 1979) LP here. The "Rough Sound" EP doesn't seem to be available though, at least not that I could find.

"Bud Luxford bands: From 1980-81, promoter, manager and raconteur Bud Luxford began organizing revue-style showcase concerts that exclusively featured fuck bands. Eventually, the mere presence of such concerts spurred the creation of dozens more ad-hoc combos. These concerts and their audiences became a scene-within-a-scene. The light-hearted, fun-first ethic and musical variety provided a welcome change-of-pace from hardcore-style punk shows. The flagship bands of the Bud Luxford stable were Rude Norton, Buddy Selfish, and Los Radicos Popularos (later shortened to Los Popularos). Los Pops were the super-group of fuck bands, featuring Bill Shirt, Art Bergmann, John Armstrong, Zippy Pinhead and Tony Bardach. In January 1981, Luxford released the compilation LP, Bud Luxford Presents; followed a few months later by Volume 2, On Sale Inside. Raising the funds for the albums provided another excuse to stage more concerts. OK, so here's the hype from the time this sold on eBay for £560: "This is A RARE AND UNKNOWN UNTIL NOW UK PRIVATE PRESSING PUNK / POWER POP single by the band MOONSTRUCK from 1980 ...
This is a great PUNK / POWER POP single that is not known at all until now, and all 3 tracks are GREAT PUNK / POWER POP stormers with choppy guitars PUNK vocals and with minor touches of XTC thrown in for good measure, A GREAT FIND AND PROBABLY ONE OF THE LAST UNKNOWN PUNK GEMS FROM THE ERA !!!"

100 copies made, for promotional purposes as indicated by the sticker on the label. No song titles or any other info, just 2 stickers on the label on one side.

How much of that £560 was for the rarity and associated hype? I kinda /sorta like it, especially the 2 songs on the 'B' (non-stickered) side but I'm not sure I'd call them "stormers".

Many collectors of Killed By Death records had at some time likely had some contact with Behjan. He was one of the more knowledgeable and dedicated collectors I had ever met. I think our first contact was sometime in the mid-1990's. In the following years we traded a number of cassette tapes. Many of the records on those tapes later became more known in the rush of Killed By Death, Bloodstains and similar compilations that appeared in the late 1990's.

I didn't have much contact with Behjan over the past several years. We had exchanged several emails last year after he found me on Facebook. Like many, I was shocked to learn via the Yahoo kbd group of his passing on December 8. Here is a sample of the comments in response to the initial posting:

"Behjan was definitely one of the more interesting and enthusiastic folks I interacted with in my early days of collecting"

"very sad to hear this. behjan was a champion detective and a close ally in the 90's kbd discovery era."

Sometimes it feels like I've dug through almost every record store Canada in the past 20 years and yet I still keep finding out about things I hadn't heard of before. Until someone left a comment on a previous "Obscure Canada" post I hadn't heard of The Reasons. Recorded in 1982 at Elora Sound, near Guelph, Ontario there were 5000 copies pressed. Where they all ended up is beyond me but now there are 4, 999 out there somewhere. Of the 4 songs on the EP 3 are excellent (power)pop/rock. The other song is a longer, slower ballad that didn't interest me as much but 3 out of 4 ain't bad. A slightly different version of the line-up that recorded this EP also released a cassette single in 1989 under the name CB4U. The name then changed back to The Reasons in the 90's. Peter Rea is still playing - check out the current version of The Reasons.

All I could find on this Swedish record was one entry listing it as "punkrock". I guess "Transplation" is "Transplantation"? In any case this does have some punk sounds and seems pretty amateurish, which isn't always a bad thing. The Encyclopedia of Swedish Punk says "uneven and dark but may attract 77 [style punk] collectors".

Sometimes described as a punk group, Térapi were from Montreal and released a 7" EP and a 12" EP. There's also a promo 7" with 2 tracks from the 12". I wouldn't call it punk though at times the vocals might be considered so. I found the 7" more interesting than the 12".

Al Pic & The Shovels (Canada, late 70s/early 80s)

I saw the song "Sleazy People" once described as "cool ultra new wave" so I decided to take a chance on it for $5 but I couldn't find much info about Al Pic & The Shovels. Likely from the Niagara Falls / St. Catharines, Ontario area, I know of 3 7"s that were released sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. None of them have a picture sleeve that I've seen or any release dates on the labels. One list gave a date of 1978 and another said "early 80s". Other than "Sleazy People" I don't care much for any of their other songs. The B side is best avoided but if you do like it, their other 2 7"s (On My Mind / Fortunate Fool (Cherry CR 1001) and Sunday Behind / Love Passing By (Cherry CR 1003)) might interest you.

Another Swedish powerpop/rock 7" from the Pang label. I don't see any date on the sleeve or record but I've seen it listed as 1979, 1980 or 1982. 1982 seems too late since it one of the earlier Pang releases (PSI-004 on the sleeve, PSI-003 on the label). There doesn't seem to be much other info about this anywhere that I could find.

This post is more for the obscurity / novelty factor than anything else. According to the South African Rock Encyclopedia, the band eVoid began in 1979 as Void. They spent about 8 months in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe in 1979 where this single was recorded. Described as a "a pogo-inspired cover of The Knack's My Sharona" I thought it might be worth checking out. It didn't give me the urge to jump up and pogo around the room but maybe you'll disagree. It did however manage to make it to #3 on the charts in Zimbabwe in January 1980. There were no other releases until 1983 when the name changed to eVoid. I don't know if it ever came with a picture sleeve.

Allison were from Askøy (outside Bergen), Norway and apparently were influenced by British new wave and punk. I haven't heard enough of their material to comment on whether that might be the case. Most of what I have read about them says they were more of a rock band than punk or new wave. They released at least one LP and several singles. This is the only one I have and I bought it cheap just because of the title of the A side. It was recorded live in December 1979.

This is the first of 2 posts today with some offbeat Swiss experimental style bands. If you've come looking for punk or powerpop, maybe next time. This release was the first on the Winterschatten label from Basel. One track appeared on the New Wave Complex - Volume 11 cd-r compilation. This was very likely their only release. Instruments used were monophonic synthesizer, echo/hall unit and plastic trashcan, recorded at home on a 4-track.
